Did I Arrive Too Late?
Well, Im a mostly-new Guild Wars player, and I have been looking around for some RolePlaying guilds recently....
Thats right, Roleplaying. I have googled, asked ingame, other Forums, nearly everything.... To show my pain, the most recent google result was a thread from '06. Is Roleplaying dead with the soon-release of GW2? Anyway, if anyone could help me find a mostly-active RP guild, that would rock. Im not picky, as long as you dont hate on me. Thank you. - |

Unfortunately, role playing is pretty rare in GW, even though it has, imo, a very unique and robust world setting. As for your search, try Guru's Looking For Guild forum.

Back on topic, I remember a RP guild a while back that made videos and put them on YouTube, the plot was pants and the voice acting was worse than Danika's.. But at least it's (or was?) still a RP guild. |

Unfortunately there aren't near as many "roll-players" as there used to be just due to the fact that the missions are all pretty easy to solo with heroes/henchmen. Plus many of the players on now have already beaten many if not all of the games.

There are very few role playing games where players role play with each other.
Simply because role playing involves many things that are nothing whatever to do with adventuring. Sure you role play with the npcs but that's scripted. Role playing works in virtual world chat rooms where you create avatars and mainly talk. It also works on tabletop games with friends round a table or in live action role playing often called reenactment or more usually LARP. Have seen little role playing in guild wars and have often been told I shouldn't look for it because GW isn't an RPG. The day they set up in character Bars Ins Cafe's and Markets you will see role playing and that role playing will spread onto the missions and become part of the game. First it needs the correct environment to encourage it. Player run Markets and Bars in the major towns please anet if you want role playing. |

*shrug* GW1 is pretty bad for RP, honestly. There's a single storyline, you're completely railroaded, there are basically not non-combat attributes to your character, and making a build from a role-playing point of view often leads to disaster. It's not surprising to me that it's not a particularly popular pastime here.
GW2, on the other hand, should be an RP-ers dream... |

I doubt that GW2 will be RP friendly either. To be really RP friendly you need more non-combat aspects to the game such as in WoW, LOTRO, etc., where you can get into crafting, hobbies, etc. From what we've seen so far, GW2 looks very combat oriented - I don't recall any mention of crafting, etc..
Edit - they do mention crafting, but then again, they consider gathering materials and buying armor in GW1 to be "crafting", so..... Last edited by Quaker; Aug 03, 2010 at 05:48 PM // 17:48.. |

As for GW2 being more rpg oriented...meh I don't know, you'll have a bit of background and events will change depending on what you do, so less of a railroad but still, as Quaker said... That's why I love rpgs but I don't think I'd be able to roleplay in gw (other than for my bad english) |

There's no point to RP when you're the third zillion guy to make a mission. To truly RP you have to live unique adventures, no one in the world has. If you have nothing to say but what other people and you other characters already have experienced ... well, it's pointless, isn't it ?
So MMORPG aren't role playing games. They only take their main technical aspect of character sheet. Surprisingly, if people want to roleplay, there are better opportunities with tactical or strategic games, in wich you can roleplay with other people/alliances diplomacy, battles, peace talks, being the first to discover any major technology, ... |
